Finding Inspiration - Baby Shower Themes

You don’t really need a theme for your baby shower party, but having one can make a world of a difference and add charm to the occasion. Choosing and implementing a theme isn’t as complex as it might seem, and there are limitless options that you can choose from. In fact, having a theme will help you come up with more creative ideas for your invitations, room decorations, food, games, and other shower party details.

If you decide to use a theme for your shower party, remember: one essential part of planning a baby shower is making sure you give yourself enough time to organize, so make sure to give yourself at least a 2-month head start for planning.

The Essentials

Before you begin looking at theme ideas, take the time to do the following:

Decide on the type of the shower party. This means whether your shower party is going to be women-only or will be a couple’s shower; the first type will enable you to adopt more feminine themes and activities if you wish to do so, the latter will require choosing a theme that works for both men and women.

Plan your theme. Once you have a theme in mind, you’re going to need to clock in some serious scavenging time to fine items and decorations that are related to your theme. If you can’t find what you’re looking for at shops, consider resorting to online shopping or changing the theme entirely. A bit of theme brainstorming beforehand will help you come up with 2-3 themes just in case the first one falls through.

Purchase everything at the same time. This might not always be possible due to financial limitations, but it’s worth a try. The reasoning behind this is that certain products won’t remain in stock for a long time, so buying a small amount and then coming back for more won’t always be possible. Such items include invitation cards with a certain image or theme; balloons in particular shapes or colors; and centerpieces.

Think outside the box. You don’t need to stick to typical decoration and theme ideas. Feel free to mix and match, customize, and come up with crazy and new ideas all by yourself! You can also brainstorm with friends or seek inspiration in unlikely sources such as cartoon shows, entertainment destinations, books, and even cultures from around the world.

Apply the theme to the whole shower part. While you don’t need to do this, it would be more fun if your napkins, plates, food, favors, games and other shower party aspects matched the theme.

Theme Ideas

Here are a few theme suggestions to get your creative juices flowing:

Fairytales & Fables: Go through your favorite nursery rhymes or pick out a theme from one of your favorite stories or poems, and decorate with characters and scenes from your favorite parts. Ideas include Little Bo Peep, Mother Goose, or even Dr. Suess. You can give things a more interesting twist by choosing nursery stories from your own culture.

Garden Tea Party: Organize an outdoor morning tea party and set up tables with their individual tea sets, fresh flower centerpieces, and light foods such as scones, croissants, mini sandwiches and cupcakes. Make sure to ask your guests to dress up for the occasion to give it a more posh feel.

A Star will be Born: Make the mother-to-be feel like she’s about to give birth to a real star by laying out a red carpet for the guests, adopting a Hollywood theme and having each guest leave a special message on the video for the expecting mother.
